Professor Philip van Beynen was interviewed on the topic “Karst in Urban Areas”, and brings important data on the subject, with beautiful illustrations and with examples from all over the world. The interview took place on September 17, 2020, with the participation of Vanda de Claudino-Sales (Professor of the Academic Master in Geography at the State University of Vale do Acarau-UVA) and Saulo Roberto Oliveira Vital (Professor of the Department of Geography and the Post-Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Paraiba - UFPB), and was transcribed by Diego Nunes Valadares, master's student on Geography at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte.</p> <p>Professor van Beynen was born in New Zealand, where he received his degree in Geography at the University of Auckland. He earned a master's degree from the same university, and a doctorate and post-doctorate from McMaster University, Canada. He has been a professor at the School of Geoscience at the University of South Florida since 2009, where he&nbsp;&nbsp; has been developing research related to different components of karst environments. This evolutionary dynamic was widely proven for the Bananal River basin, right slope of the MVRPS. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the repercussions of these two cycles in the Rio Turvo basin, left slope of the MVRPS. Surveys of fluvial deposits were made in several sub-basins, through mapping and thickness the volumetry of these deposits was obtained. 15 analyzes were performed by C<sup>14</sup> dating in 9 stratigraphic profiles. Geochronological studies (AMS C<sup>14</sup>) on the river terraces of the Turvo and Pedras rivers show that they were formed in the same erosive-depositional cycle, between 8000-10000 years ago, identified for the Bananal River basin. However, erosion rates were higher in the Bananal River basin (Piracema River sub-basin) (38,500 m<sup>3</sup>/year), followed by the Pedras River sub-basin (2,240 m<sup>3</sup>/year) and other Turvo River sub-basins (320 m<sup>3</sup>/year). On the other hand, comparing the sedimentation rates of the coffee period, similar rates were observed between the basins of the Turvo and Bananal rivers (96,640 m<sup>3</sup>/year and 97,160 m<sup>3</sup>/year, respectively). During moderately long periods of time, for example, river channel morphology is dependent on the geologic and climatic environment, but during a shorter span of time, channel morphology is an independent variable influencing the hydraulics of the channel.</p> <p>During a long period of time a drainage system or its components can be considered as an open system which is progressively losing potential energy and mass (erosion cycle), but over shorter spans of time self-regulation is important, and components of the system may be graded or in dynamic equilibrium.
